This special Spirit has learned how to
make the cherished sweetgrass baskets
from the slaves that once lived on Sapelo Island. Sweetgrass and palm stems are
gathered and intertwined
to make practical works of art.
The basket this Spirit holds is a 'fanner',
once used to separate the rice from its shaft.
Now it holds gifts from the sea...
local whelks, sand dollars, seawhips,
cochinas, lettered olives, and seastars.
Stories are told as the baskets are woven.
Stories, centuries old,
are passed down through generations.
